Genitalia

  • Collective term for the male or female sexual organs.
  • In the female refers to the labia, clitoris and vagina.
  • In the male refers to the penis, scrotum and testicles.
  • Alternatively called the genitals.

Gentian Violet

  • A green crystalline substance that becomes violet in solution.
  • Used as an antiseptic.
  • A tiny drop can be put on the tongue or skin as a marker during piercing.
  • Also called &quotCrystal Violet".

Glans Clitoris

  • The very sensitive small round visible part of the clitoris.

Glans Penis

  • The round head at the end of the shaft of the penis.

Glutaraldehyde

  • A disinfectant used in the cleaning of instruments prior to sterilization.
  • Has a shelf life of only weeks when opened.
  • Highly toxic to humans and requires special precautions in use - follow manufacturer's directions.
  • Chemical formula C5H8O2
  • Brand names include Cidex ® and Wavicide ®

Gold

  • A heavy bright yellow metal used in jewelry.
  • Atomic Number 79.
  • Chemical Symbol &quotAu".
  • Melting point 1063oC
  • Pure or &quotfine" gold is very soft and weak, so for jewelry it is mixed with other metals such silver, copper, nickel and palladium.
    e.g.

Gold Plating

  • A coating of pure gold applied over a base of some cheaper metal, usually nickel.
  • Typically such coats are only 3 microns thick (say 1/1000 of an inch).
  • Pure gold is very soft and the coating eventually wears off, sometimes within months and before a piercing is healed.
  • For this reason gold plated jewelry should only be used in healed piercings.

Granulation Tissue

  • Sometimes called a &quotpolyp" or &quotproud flesh".
  • A collection of new tissue and blood vessels often seen at the opening of a piercing.
  • Usually caused by friction at the opening of the piercing.
  • Can be surgically removed by a physician or reduced in size by chemical cautery: the application of copper sulphate crystal or a silver nitrate stick.
  • Bleeds easily in contrast to keloid.

Guiche

  • A piercing of the male perineum.
  • Can run vertically or transversely from one side of the body to the other.
